KIDNEYS

RENAL COLIC

Renal colic is an acute pain (of quick start) that originates in the renal fossa (where the kidneys are located), usually associated with general malaise and/or vomiting. The pain has three main characteristics: It is unilateral, it does not change with changes in position and it radiates following the ureteral path (it starts in the upper back, passes to the abdomen and continues towards the genitals). The most common cause of renal colic is Reno ureteral lithiasis (stones in the upper part of the urinary tract). Treatment focuses on figuring out what is causing the pain.

KIDNEY STONES

Reno ureteric lithiasis is the medical term for stones in the upper urinary tract. It is the most common cause of renal colic. Although there are genetic diseases that predispose to the formation of stones in the urinary tract, in the vast majority of cases it’s idiopathic (of unknown cause). In addition to pain, blood may appear in the urine. Although the origin of stones is not clear, it has been shown that proper hydration prevents stone formation. Treatment depends on the size, shape and position of the stones and can range from spontaneous expulsion with medical treatment (pills) to endoscopic or laparoscopic surgery.

RENAL CANCER

Kidney cancer is among the top 10 cancers in both men and women. Although the probability of suffering from it is higher in men than in women (2.02% and 1.03% respectively), the most common type of kidney cancer is clear cell adenocarcinoma. The main symptoms are bleeding in the urine, loss of breath and unexplained weight loss, pain in the back or side that does not disappear even with analgesic treatment. Currently, most kidney cancers are diagnosed accidentally with an imaging test, that is, they are diagnosed before symptoms appear. The treatment in most cases is surgery.

Hidratación, el arma más efectiva contra la formación de piedras

La orina está compuesta por partículas sólidas sumergidas en una parte líquida. A menor cantidad de líquido mayor es la probabilidad de que las partículas sólidas se junten hasta que formen una piedra.

KIDNEY INFECTION

Acute pyelonephritis is the medical term used to refer to kidney infection. In most cases, a kidney infection is caused by bacteria that ascend from the urethra or bladder to the kidney. The main symptoms are fever and pain in the kidney fossa (upper part of the left or right side) and discomfort when urinating. Another less common symptom is bleeding in the urine. The usual treatment is with broad-spectrum antibiotics for 10 to 12 days, although hospital admission for intravenous treatment is sometimes required.

KIDNEY TRAUMA

Kidney trauma is when damage occurs to the kidney due to a high-impact blow, wound from knives or firearms. In most cases it is a urological emergency and treatment varies depending on the kidney damage and ranges from maintaining complete rest to total removal of the kidney. It is important to quickly contact medical personnel.
