ENLARGED PROSTATE

BPH stands for Benign Prostate Hyperplasia and this is nothing more than an increase in the size of the prostate. The duct through which the bladder is emptied passes through the prostate and, when it increases in size, it strangles that duct in a similar way to that of tightly squeezing a hose through which water comes out. This causes symptoms such as a decrease in the strength of the urine stream or the urge to urinate continuously, among others. Treatment will depend on the severity of the symptoms, and can range from pills to endoscopic laser surgery.

PROSTATE CANCER

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men (AECC and ANCAP in 2023). In most cases, it does not cause symptom, therefore it’s highly recommended to have prostate check-ups regularly from the age of 45. The diagnosis is made through a biopsy that indicates whether there is a suspicion of prostate cancer. To establish this suspicion, various techniques are used, including blood analysis, rectal examination or MRI. Depending on how advanced it may be at the time of diagnosis, there are different types of treatments, including radical surgery.

PSA ELEVATION

PSA is a protein present in the blood stream, which is only produced by the prostate. Elevation of PSA is one of the criteria used to establish suspicion of prostate cancer. Other causes of elevated PSA are prostate inflammation, ejaculations in the 24 hours before the blood test and traumatic stimulation in the 12 to 24 hours before the analysis (long bicycle rides, horseback riding, etc.). It is important that you contact us if there is an increase in your PSA levels.

PROSTATITIS

Prostatitis is the medical term given to inflammation of the prostate, which is typically caused by bacterial infection. There are other less recurrent and studied causes, although basically all of them cause inflammation of the prostate. The most common symptoms are discomfort when urinating, pain or discomfort in the area between the testicles and the anus (perineum), pain in the groin, lower abdomen or lower back, appearance of blood in the urine and /or in semen, among others. If these symptoms are accompanied by fever and general malaise, they require urgent attention. Treatment will depend on what caused it and it will be handled according to the patient’s prognosis.

BLOOD IN SEMEN

Hematospermia is the medical name that describes blood in semen. Although there are a large number of reasons that can cause hematospermia, in the vast majority of cases it’s benign. Among the non-benign causes, it should be noted that up to 14% of cases are associated with prostate cancer. Treatment will depend on the cause, although in most cases it does not require treatment. It is important to keep in mind that due to the wide variety of triggers, the appearance of blood in semen should always be studied.

HBP LASER SURGERY

Laser prostate surgery is used for the treatment of enlarged prostate. It consists of removing all the prostate tissue that obstructs the outflow of urine from the bladder endoscopically, without the need for open surgery. It’s one of our most innovative procedures and, among all its advantages, it’s worth highlighting the speedy recovery, the short hospitalization time and the avoidance of all complications associated with the wounds that occur due to open surgery.
