PENIS

«El pene está compuesto principalmente por 3 tubos, 2 en la parte superior llamados cuerpos cavernosos que son los que al llenarse de sangre, permiten la erección y otro en la parte inferior llamado cuerpo esponjoso que es por donde pasa la uretra (conducto por donde se vacía la vejiga). La parte final del cuerpo esponjoso es el glande, toda la estructura está cubierta por piel, la porción de piel que recubre el glande se llama prepucio y su afectación es causa de numerosos problemas urológicos. «

PHIMOSIS

Phimosis is the narrowing of the penis’ foreskin, causing strangulation of the glans or the inability to retract the skin to reveal it. In children, it’s a common situation between the ages of 3 and 4. When phimosis is pathological, it causes discomfort or inability to have sexual relations and, in more severe cases, even problems urinating. There are many reasons that can cause this condition and among them are the lack of elasticity of the foreskin, infections, diabetes or some synthetic skin diseases. The treatment is surgical through circumcision.

SHORT PENIS FRENULUM

The short preputial frenulum is an alteration that makes partial or total retraction of the foreskin impossible. Unlike phimosis, the skin that covers the glans is not affected. It’s an annoying condition that manifests itself usually when having sexual relations. Sometimes it can partially break during handling, causing profuse bleeding. Its definitive treatment is surgical through frenulectomy or frenuloplasty.

PENIS CURVATURE

Penile curvature (known as Peyronie’s disease) is a condition in which the penis curves abnormally, causing painful erections and/or sexual dysfunction. It’s caused by a formation of scar tissue inside the penis. The reason in most cases is unknown, among the known causes are trauma, genetic predisposition, autoimmune diseases and chronic inflammation. It’s important to note that not all penis curvatures are necessarily caused by a disease. In most cases, surgical treatment is required.

PENILE TRAUMA

Approximately 25% of penile traumas are due to violent causes, the rest involve sexual activity. Penile fracture occurs when one or both cavernous bodies break their envelope, letting the blood escape from inside which can cause, immediately, the accumulation of blood (hematoma) in the penis and, later, alterations such as Peyronie’s disease (see curvature of the penis), erectile dysfunction, among others. In severe cases, there is also involvement of the corpora cavernosa. Once a penile fracture has been diagnosed, it must be treated as quickly as possible to avoid permanent consequences.

SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES (STD's)

STD is short for sexually transmitted diseases. In recent years, an increase in STDs has been observed in Spain, becoming a public health concern. There are a large number of STDs and part of the problem is ignorance and lack of health education. Among the most common in men are balanitis, urethritis due to gonococcus and/or chlamydia, Ureaplasma infections, herpes, HPV (human papillomavirus), syphilis, HCV (hepatitis C), HIV, among others. The variety of symptoms they can present makes it difficult to summarize them in this text. It’s important to insist on the use of protection during sexual relations and proper sexual education since a young adult age on this matter.
