BLADDER

BLEEDING IN URINE

Hematuria is the medical term to refer to blood in the urine. There are several causes that can provoke hematuria, among the most common are urinary infection, lithiasis (stones) and tumors in the urinary tract. Blood in urine is not always visible to the human eye. There can be blood in urine without apparently altering its color, this is called microhematuria and should be studied in the same way as hematuria itself. Treatment consists of treating the cause, so it is very important to contact me if you experience bleeding in your urine.

URINE INFECTION

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most frequently consulted pathologies in urology; it is more common in women than in men. It’s usually subclassified into two categories: lower urinary tract infection and upper urinary tract infection. In most cases, lower UTIs present themselves in burning when urinating, frequent urination (desire to urinate continuously), urinary urgency, bleeding in the urine may also occur, fever is not usually present, unlike upper UTIs where there is generally fever and general malaise. Treatment is based on antibiotics and will depend on the severity of the infection.

URINARY INCONTINENCE

Urinary incontinence refers to the involuntary loss of urine. This is not a disease as such, but rather a symptom of problems such as weakness of the pelvic floor, which usually occurs after childbirth in women. This is a urinary incontinence based on physical effort, that is, urine escapes by increasing intra-abdominal pressure as occurs when coughing or sneezing. Another type of incontinence is urgency, which occurs because the bladder is not able to wait for the brain “order” and empties prematurely. Treatment will depend on the type of incontinence and what causes it.

BLADDER STONES

Bladder lithiasis is the medical term for stones in the bladder. Unlike kidney stones, those that form in the bladder in most cases are due to inefficient emptying. If the bladder is not emptied correctly, urine accumulates for a longer time, causing sediments that later crystallize to form the stones. Among the common symptoms are urinary urgency, frequency (urge to urinate continuously), pain in the lower abdomen and sometimes bleeding in the urine. The treatment is surgical, using different types of energy the lithiasis is destroyed. The current treatment of choice is laser spraying.

BLADDER TUMOR

Bladder tumors are abnormal growths within the bladder. They can be cancerous (malignant) or non-cancerous (benign). In most cases, bladder tumors are cancerous. The aggressiveness and therefore the prognosis of this disease will depend on how deeply it infiltrates the bladder. Among the most common symptoms is bladder bleeding (although this can occur in other pathologies), and discomfort when urinating. The diagnosis includes a series of studies, including urine analysis, imaging tests such as ultrasound or CT, and cystoscopy (examination of the bladder with a camera). The treatment is surgical.

URINARY RETENTION

Acute urinary retention (AUR) is the most common urological emergency. It refers to the inability to empty the bladder suddenly and painfully. The most common cause in men is an enlarged prostate, other causes are stones in the bladder or urethra (duct through which the bladder is emptied), urgent treatment is to drain the bladder and is generally done by placing a urinary catheter. The definitive treatment is to eliminate what caused it. If you suspect you may suffer from acute urinary retention, it’s important that you seek urgent medical attention and go to the urologist for evaluation.
